Can Dogs Eat Apple Chips?

Yes, plain apple chips are fine for dogs in small amounts. Here is how to pick or bake a safe batch, what to skip on the label, and what to do after a mix-up.

Short answer · SafeYes, if plain.no sugar, no seeds

Yes, dogs can eat plain apple chips in small amounts. The AKC says apple slices are a good low-fat snack once the seeds and core are removed. Skip chips with added sugar, spices, or sweetener. Check the label, because sugar-free products can contain xylitol, which is dangerous for dogs.

Are apple chips safe for dogs?

Plain ones are. The AKC lists apples as a low-fat, low-protein snack with fiber and vitamins A and C. A chip is just a dried apple slice, so the same rules apply: no seeds and no core.

The AKC says the seeds hold a small amount of cyanide, which can harm dogs in large doses. A few seeds are unlikely to cause harm, but it still says to keep them away from your dog. The tough core and stem can also cause choking.

The AKC says a whole apple has about 19 grams of sugar. It suggests one or two slices as plenty for most dogs. I did not find a vet source that gives an amount for dried apple, so treat that as a ceiling and go smaller.

What should I look for on the label?

Pick a bag that lists only apple. Many chips made for people have extras that your dog does not need.

  • Added sugar or syrup. The AKC says many dried fruits made for people, such as cranberries, are sweetened. That adds sugar your dog does not need.
  • Spices. The AKC says to avoid apple foods with spices, and it names nutmeg. Cinnamon-coated chips fall in this group too.
  • Xylitol. The ASPCA lists sugar-free foods among the products that can contain it. In dogs it can make blood sugar drop and can cause vomiting, weakness, and seizures. Very large doses can cause liver failure.

If the label is long or confusing, don’t share the chips.

How can I make dog-safe apple chips?

The AKC describes a simple way to do it at home:

  1. Slice an apple thinly and remove the core and seeds.
  2. Bake the slices at 200°F for about two hours, until they are completely crispy.
  3. Let them cool before you share.

Nothing else goes on them. No sugar, no cinnamon.

How many apple chips can a dog have?

A few. The AKC says fruit should add to your dog’s regular food, not replace it. It does not give a number for dried apple, and I did not find another vet source that does.

Start with one chip and watch your dog for stomach upset. For puppies, the AKC says to watch for allergic signs and stomach trouble after a first taste, and to call your vet if they happen.

What if my dog ate a bag of apple chips?

First, read the ingredients. If the bag lists only apple, there is no poison to worry about from the label. Call your vet if your dog seems unwell, or if you are not sure what was in the bag.

If you see xylitol on the label, call a hotline or your vet right away. The ASPCA says to go to a vet at once if your dog shows signs. Bring the package with you.

Seeds or cores in the chips can also be a worry. The AKC says to watch for digestive trouble or a blockage if a dog eats a core or seeds.

What can I give my dog instead?

Fresh apple slices are the easiest swap. Our guide to apples for dogs shows how to serve them. Blueberries are another easy fruit treat. For a longer list of foods to avoid, see our guide to foods that are toxic to dogs.
