Can Dogs Eat Corn Dogs?

No, corn dogs are not a good snack for dogs. One small bite is unlikely to hurt a healthy dog. But a corn dog is fried, fatty, and salty, and the stick can be dangerous if your dog swallows it. If your dog got a whole one, call your vet for advice.

Why aren’t corn dogs good for dogs?

A corn dog is a hot dog in a thick fried coating. That brings three problems.

Fat. The AKC says a high-fat diet is one of the most common triggers for pancreatitis. That is a painful swelling of the pancreas, a small organ near the stomach. In some dogs, one large serving of fatty food is enough. The Merck Veterinary Manual says that eating trash or a lot of table scraps is a common risk. Sources we read don’t name hot dogs or corn dogs, but they are fatty food. Some breeds are more at risk, such as Miniature Schnauzers, Yorkshire Terriers, and Dachshunds.

Salt. The ASPCA says too much salt can cause thirst and peeing more, and sometimes a change in the body’s minerals. In bad cases it can cause vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, and seizures. Pet Poison Helpline says salty snacks are one source of salt poisoning in pets. One bite is not likely to cause this. But a whole corn dog, or a few, is more salt than a dog needs.

Hidden seasonings. The ASPCA says onions and garlic can damage red blood cells and cause anemia. Merck says dried and powdered forms are the most concentrated. We can’t say what is in any one brand of corn dog, so check the label.

Is the corn dog stick dangerous?

Yes, it can be. The stick is the part owners forget. A dog that gulps a corn dog may swallow the stick too.

Cornell says a swallowed object that gets stuck in the gut is an emergency. It lists bones and corn cobs among the things that commonly cause blockages. The page doesn’t talk about corn dog sticks, so we can’t say how often they cause problems. But it is wise to treat any swallowed stick as a reason to call your vet.

Watch for these after your dog eats a fatty food like a corn dog, according to the AKC and Merck:

• Throwing up, sometimes many times
• Not wanting to eat
• A sore or swollen belly, or a hunched back
• Diarrhea
• Weakness or tiredness
• Dehydration

Signs can show up within hours or days, and some mild cases show few signs. Call your vet if you see several of these. The AKC says to get care right away if your dog won’t drink, can’t keep water down, or gets weaker. Early care helps prevent problems, says Merck.

What should I do if my dog ate a corn dog?

1. Take away the rest and look for the stick. Count the pieces so you know whether a stick is missing.
2. Check the label or ask the seller what is in it.
3. Call your vet if your dog ate a whole corn dog, may have swallowed the stick, or has a health problem such as pancreatitis in the past.
4. Watch your dog for the signs above for the next few days.

Can dogs eat mini corn dogs?

Better not. They are made the same way as full-size ones. Their small size makes it easier for a dog to swallow one whole, stick and all.

Can dogs eat plain hot dogs?

It is best to skip them. A hot dog has the same fat and salt, without the stick. If you want to use one for training, ask your vet first, especially if your dog has had pancreatitis or other health problems.
