Can Dogs Eat Cucumbers?

Yes, plain cucumber is a safe, low-calorie treat for dogs. Here’s how to serve it, how much is fine, and why pickles and seasoned slices are a bad idea.

Short answer · SafeYes, a little.plain, cut small, no pickles

Yes, dogs can eat cucumbers. Plain cucumber is low in calories and mostly water, so it makes a cool, crunchy treat for most dogs. Serve it washed and cut into small pieces, give only a little, and skip pickles and anything seasoned.

Why cucumbers are okay for dogs

The American Kennel Club (AKC) says cucumber is about 96% water. A half cup of slices has only about 8 calories. It is also fat-free and very low in salt.

That makes cucumber a good pick for dogs who need to lose weight. AKC says it can help an overweight dog get in shape without cutting out treats, especially when paired with exercise.

Are there any risks?

AKC names two risks:

  • Eating too much. A lot of cucumber, or too much too fast, can upset your dog’s stomach.
  • Choking. Big chunks can choke small dogs and dogs who gulp their food.

Cut cucumber into pieces that suit your dog’s size. For a small dog or a fast eater, think bite-sized or smaller.

How to serve cucumber safely

  1. Wash it. Rinse the cucumber well before you cut it.
  2. Cut it small. Make slices or cubes that match your dog’s size.
  3. Keep it plain. No salt, spices, or dips.
  4. Start with a little. Offer one or two pieces the first time and watch your dog.

AKC says the skin and seeds are generally fine, so you do not need to peel or scoop them out.

How much cucumber can a dog eat?

AKC does not give a set amount. It does say treats should be no more than about 10% of your dog’s daily diet. Your dog’s regular food should supply the rest. A few pieces is plenty for most dogs.

Other kinds of cucumber foods

Can dogs eat pickles?

No, skip them. AKC says pickles have added salt, spices, and other ingredients that may harm dogs. The ASPCA says too much salt can make a dog very thirsty and make them pee more. In bad cases it can cause vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, and seizures.

Pickles may also be made with garlic or onion. The ASPCA says onion and garlic can upset the stomach and damage red blood cells, which can lead to anemia (too few healthy red blood cells). It is not worth the risk.

Can dogs eat seasoned cucumber salad or cucumber with dip?

No. Dressings, dips, and salads often have salt, garlic, or onion. Check the label for xylitol, a sweetener the ASPCA says can drop a dog’s blood sugar to dangerous levels and may harm the liver. Give your dog a plain piece from before you season it instead.

What if my dog eats too much cucumber?

Too much can lead to an upset stomach. The Merck Veterinary Manual lists sudden vomiting and diarrhea as common signs of stomach upset. Call your vet if the vomiting does not stop, or if your dog has a sore or swollen belly, bloody vomit or stool, or seems weak or very tired.

Those signs can also mean something is stuck in the gut. Merck says this is an emergency. If your dog gulped a large piece of cucumber, watch for vomiting, no interest in food, and a tired or hurting dog, and call your vet.

Other treats to try

Plain fruits and vegetables can fill the same role. Try a few apple slices (no core or seeds) or a little banana. Some foods are never safe, even in small amounts. See our list of foods that are toxic to dogs.
