Can Dogs Eat Lettuce?
Yes, dogs can eat plain lettuce in small amounts. Here is how to serve it, why salads and green tomato parts are a problem, and when too much causes trouble.
Yes, dogs can eat plain lettuce. The AKC says romaine and iceberg lettuce are not toxic to dogs. Wash it, chop it into small pieces, and give only a little. Too much can upset your dog’s stomach. Salad toppings and tomato plant leaves are where the trouble starts.
Is lettuce good for dogs?
Lettuce is a light, crunchy snack. The AKC notes that it has fiber and beta-carotene, which the body turns into vitamin A. It is also mostly water.
That does not make it a must-have. Your dog gets what they need from a complete dog food. Think of lettuce as a small extra for a dog that likes the crunch.
How do I serve lettuce to my dog?
Keep it simple:
- Rinse it well. The AKC warns that lettuce can carry germs such as E. coli and listeria. These can make dogs and people in your home sick.
- Chop it up. Big pieces are harder to digest, especially for small dogs. Small bits are also easier to chew.
- Serve it plain. No dressing, salt, or seasoning.

How much lettuce can a dog eat?
A little. The AKC says too much can cause diarrhea, because lettuce has a lot of fiber. It does not give an exact amount, so start with a few small pieces and see how your dog does. If your dog has loose stool, stop.
Other kinds of lettuce and salad
Can dogs eat romaine, iceberg, or arugula?
Yes. The AKC lists romaine, iceberg, and arugula as non-toxic to dogs. Serve them the same way: washed, chopped, and plain. Spinach is also non-toxic, but the AKC says it has oxalic acid, which can block calcium and may harm the kidneys. Romaine or iceberg is the easier pick.
Can dogs eat salad?
It is best not to share yours. The AKC says salads often have ingredients that are toxic to dogs, such as onions. Dressing and other toppings add more risk. If you want to share, set aside a few plain leaves before you add anything else.
Can dogs eat lettuce and tomatoes?
Ripe tomatoes and lettuce can both be fine, but they need different care. The ASPCA says ripe tomato fruit is non-toxic to dogs. The rest of the tomato plant is not. The ASPCA lists solanine as the toxic part of the plant.
Signs of tomato plant poisoning listed by the ASPCA include:
- Drooling a lot
- Not wanting to eat
- Severe stomach upset
- Feeling down or weak
- Wide pupils
- A slow heartbeat
For a safe mix, give a few plain lettuce pieces and a bit of ripe tomato with the stem and leaves removed. Keep dogs away from tomato plants in the garden. The ASPCA page does not say how much of the plant is harmful. That is why a call to a vet is the right move.
What if my dog ate a lot of lettuce?
A big pile of lettuce will most likely cause an upset stomach or diarrhea, because of the fiber. Offer water and watch your dog. If the diarrhea does not stop, or your dog seems weak, call your vet.
If the lettuce came in a salad, check what else was in it. Onions are one example the AKC gives of a salad ingredient that is toxic to dogs. If you are not sure, call your vet or a poison hotline.
Other crunchy treats to try
If your dog likes the crunch, you could also try small pieces of plain apple, without the core or seeds. Treats of any kind should be no more than about 10% of your dog’s daily calories. For the full list of foods to avoid, see our guide to foods that are toxic to dogs.
