Short answer · SafeYes, a little.no peel, no pit

Yes, dogs can eat mango as an occasional treat. The soft fruit is not toxic. But you must peel it and remove the pit first, because the pit can choke your dog or get stuck inside the belly. Keep mango to a small part of your dog’s diet.

Why is mango okay for dogs?

The AKC says mango has a lot of fiber. It also has vitamins A, B6, C, and E. That makes the flesh a healthy treat when you serve it the right way.

Mango is still a treat, not a meal. Too much can upset your dog’s belly. The AKC lists belly aches and diarrhea as the likely results of eating too much.

How do I serve mango to my dog?

Follow these steps, based on the AKC’s advice:

  1. Peel it. Dogs can eat the skin, but it is hard to digest. It is easier to take it off first.
  2. Remove the pit. Cut all the flesh away and throw the pit out where your dog can’t reach it.
  3. Cut it into small pieces. Small pieces lower the risk of choking.

Start with one or two small pieces. Then watch your dog for a day to see how their belly handles it.

How much mango can a dog eat?

The AKC says mango should be no more than 10% of your dog’s daily calories. For most dogs, that means a few small pieces now and then. The sources we read don’t give an exact amount for each dog size, so ask your vet if you are not sure.

Why is the mango pit a problem?

The AKC says a mango pit can be a serious choking risk. It can also get stuck in your dog’s digestive tract. The pit has small amounts of cyanide too. Sometimes a pit passes through without trouble, but you can’t count on that.

The Merck Veterinary Manual describes the signs of a blocked intestine:

  • Throwing up
  • Loss of appetite
  • Being very tired
  • Belly pain or a swollen belly
  • Diarrhea

The manual says surgery is usually needed to fix a blockage. It also says dogs tend to do well when the problem is found and treated quickly. Without quick care, the gut can lose its blood supply. So don’t wait to see if the pit passes.

What should I do if my dog ate mango?

If your dog ate a few pieces of peeled, pitted mango, you can relax. Watch for loose stool or an upset belly. Offer water and skip more treats for the day.

If your dog ate the pit, or a whole mango with the pit, call your vet right away. Tell them how much your dog ate and when. The Merck Veterinary Manual also says to tell the vet about anything your dog may have swallowed.
