Can Dogs Eat Pretzels?

Pretzels are not a good treat for dogs. The salt is the main problem. Here is what too much salt does, which pretzels are worse, and what to do.

Short answer · Be carefulBetter not.too salty

Pretzels are not a good treat for dogs. They are very salty, and too much salt can make a dog sick. One small, plain piece is unlikely to be the main worry, but a handful or a whole bag could be. Flavored and chocolate-covered pretzels add more risks.

Why are pretzels bad for dogs?

Pretzels have a lot of salt on the outside. Pet Poison Helpline names pretzels, chips, and salted nuts as common ways dogs get too much salt.

The ASPCA says too much salt makes dogs drink and pee more. It can also upset the balance of minerals in the blood. The Merck Veterinary Manual explains that salt poisoning happens when a dog takes in too much salt without enough water to balance it.

None of the sources I read say how many pretzels are too many. So I would not guess. Treat pretzels as something to avoid, not something to measure out.

What are the signs of too much salt?

Pet Poison Helpline lists these signs:

  • Throwing up, diarrhea, or not wanting to eat
  • Being very tired or walking as if drunk
  • Drinking and peeing a lot
  • Shaking, seizures, or coma

The ASPCA lists a similar set of signs. Pet Poison Helpline says dogs with kidney disease, diabetes, or hormone problems may be more at risk. If your dog has one of these conditions, talk to your vet before sharing any salty food.

Which pretzels are worse?

Plain salty pretzels are the baseline. These are worse:

  • Chocolate-covered pretzels. The ASPCA says chocolate can cause vomiting, diarrhea, panting, shaking, seizures, and death. Darker chocolate carries more risk. See our guide to chocolate and dogs.
  • Garlic or onion pretzels. The ASPCA says onion and garlic can damage red blood cells and lead to anemia.
  • Pretzels with sweet coatings or glazes. Check the label for xylitol, a sweetener that the ASPCA says can cause dangerously low blood sugar and liver damage.

Can dogs eat soft pretzels or pretzel dough?

Baked soft pretzels have the same salt problem, and they are often brushed with extra salt. Raw dough is a bigger danger. The ASPCA says yeast dough can keep rising inside the stomach. It can cause pain and swelling, and the stomach can twist, which is an emergency. Yeast also makes alcohol, which can cause its own signs, like stumbling and trouble breathing. Call your vet right away if your dog ate raw dough.

For plain bread, see our guide on whether dogs can eat bread.

What if my dog ate pretzels?

  1. Take the pretzels away and check how many your dog ate. Note any flavors or coatings.
  2. Check the bag for chocolate, garlic, onion, or xylitol.
  3. Offer fresh water in small amounts, often. Merck warns that big gulps of water can make nervous system signs worse after salt poisoning.
  4. Call your vet or a poison hotline if your dog ate more than a bite or two, or if you see any of the signs above.

There is no antidote for salt poisoning. Merck says treatment means removing the salt and supporting the dog, for example with fluids given slowly. That is why it matters to call early.

Other kinds of pretzels

Can dogs eat honey wheat pretzels?

Better not. The honey and wheat do not take away the salt. The sources I read do not say whether honey wheat pretzels are safe for dogs, so the same advice applies: skip them, and check the label for added ingredients.

Can dogs eat pretzel sticks and mini pretzels?

They are still salty. Small pieces make it easy for a dog to eat a lot without you noticing. Keep the bag out of reach.

What can I give my dog instead?

Dogs do not need salty snacks. Plain, small pieces of apple (no core or seeds) or banana are easier choices. Treats should stay under about 10% of your dog’s daily calories. For a full list of foods to avoid, see foods that are toxic to dogs. If your dog loves a crunchy snack, see can dogs eat popcorn for what to check first.

Common questions

Can dogs eat unsalted pretzels?

Unsalted pretzels remove the main worry, which is salt. The sources I read do not say whether they are a good treat, so they are not a food your dog needs. If you share one, keep it tiny and check the label for other ingredients.

How much salt is too much for a dog?

The sources I read do not give a safe amount for pretzels. The ASPCA says too much salt can make dogs sick, and Pet Poison Helpline does not give a number either. If your dog ate a lot, call your vet.

Can dogs eat chocolate-covered pretzels?

No. Chocolate is toxic to dogs. The ASPCA says it can cause vomiting, diarrhea, shaking, seizures, and in bad cases death. Call your vet or a poison hotline.

What should my dog drink after eating something salty?

Fresh water. Merck says to give water in small amounts, often, not big gulps all at once, if a dog has had too much salt.
