Can Cats Eat Cornish Hens?
Yes, cats can eat plain, fully cooked Cornish hen meat with no bones or skin. Here is how to serve it, and why raw meat, bones, and seasoning are a problem.
Yes, cats can eat Cornish hen if the meat is plain, fully cooked, and free of bones and skin. A Cornish hen is a small young chicken, so it is the same kind of meat as chicken. Raw meat, bones, and seasoning are what can make your cat sick.
Is Cornish hen meat okay for cats?
Yes, in small amounts. Cornell’s Feline Health Center says cats are obligate carnivores. That means they rely on nutrients found only in animal products, and they need a lot of protein. Plain cooked poultry fits that need better than most people food.
It still is not a full meal. Cornell says homemade food is hard to balance, and it may lack the right nutrients. It advises a balanced commercial cat food unless your vet recommends a home recipe. Think of Cornish hen as a treat.

Can cats eat the bones?
No. The ASPCA says raw bones can be dangerous for pets. They can hurt a cat’s stomach and gut, or block them, and a block may need surgery. The ASPCA page does not say that cooked bones are safer, and I found no source that does. Take out every bone before you share.
Cornish hens are small, and the bones are small too. That makes them easy to miss when you shred the meat. Check each piece before you hand it over. If your cat swallowed a bone, call your vet.
Is roasted Cornish hen with seasoning safe?
Not if it has onion, garlic, or a lot of salt. Many roasted birds come with herbs, butter, stuffing, or a rub. These are the parts that cause trouble.
- Onion and garlic. The ASPCA says these belong to the Allium family. They can upset the gut and damage red blood cells, which can lead to anemia. The ASPCA says cats are more at risk than dogs.
- Salt. Too much salt can cause a lot of thirst and peeing. In bad cases it can cause vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, and seizures.
- Fat. The ASPCA says fatty foods can cause vomiting and diarrhea, and may lead to pancreatitis. Skin and drippings are the fattiest parts.
If the bird was seasoned, pick a few pieces from the inside, away from the skin. Or cook a small plain piece for your cat on its own.
Can cats eat raw Cornish hen?
No. The ASPCA says raw meat can carry Salmonella and E. coli, which can make pets and people sick. Cornell says raw diets may hold bacteria, viruses, and parasites that can infect cats and the people in the home. It also says there is no clear proof of a health benefit.
The FDA adds a worry about bird flu (H5N1). It says the virus has spread to cats through food, most often raw milk or uncooked meat. The FDA also says heat inactivates the virus in meat. It asks owners to think about this risk before they feed any uncooked meat. Cooking the meat fully protects your cat.
How do I serve Cornish hen to my cat?
- Cook the meat all the way through, then let it cool.
- Pull off the skin and take out every bone.
- Shred it into small, bite-size pieces.
- Cook your cat’s share without oil, butter, salt, or spices.
- Keep the portion small. Cornell says treats should stay under 10 to 15 percent of your cat’s daily calories.
Wash your hands, the cutting board, and your tools after you handle raw poultry.
What if my cat ate something it should not have?
Watch your cat closely. Call your vet if your cat keeps vomiting, seems very tired, or stops eating. Call right away if you think your cat swallowed bones, or ate onion, garlic, or a lot of salty skin.
If your cat ate raw poultry, the FDA says to call your vet if your cat has a fever, is tired, eats less, has red or runny eyes or nose, has trouble breathing, or has tremors or seizures.
