Can Cats Eat Fish Bones?
No, fish bones are not a safe snack for cats. They can get stuck or hurt the gut. Here is what vets say, which signs to watch for, and what to do.
No, fish bones are not safe for cats. Vet sources warn that bones can get stuck in the throat or block the gut. I did not find a source that names a “safe” fish bone for cats, so take every bone out before sharing fish.
Why are fish bones a problem for cats?
Fish bones are small and sharp, and the AKC calls them “small, brittle, and dangerous” in its guide for dogs. It says they can lodge in the mouth, throat, stomach, and intestines. Sometimes they can puncture the wall of an organ.
The AKC page is about dogs, and I did not find a cat-specific fish bone source. But the Merck Veterinary Manual gives clear warnings about bones in general:
- Bones are the most common object stuck in the esophagus. The esophagus is the tube from the mouth to the stomach. Merck says this is more common in dogs than in cats, but it still happens in cats.
- Bones are digested slowly. That means they can get stuck in the gut and cause a blockage.
- Merck says a blockage in the gut should be treated as an emergency.
The FDA also lists bones among items that can lodge in a pet’s throat, stomach, or intestines.
What are the signs a cat has a bone stuck?
Merck lists these signs for something stuck in the esophagus:
- Drooling
- Gagging
- Trouble swallowing
- Bringing food back up
- Trying to swallow again and again
For a blockage further down in the gut, Merck says the most common signs are vomiting and not eating. Other signs include diarrhea and low energy. A vet may also find belly pain.

Cats often hide how bad they feel. If your cat acts different after eating fish, call your vet.
What will the vet do?
Merck says an object stuck in the esophagus should be removed as soon as it is found. Most are taken out through the mouth with a thin camera tube called an endoscope. If that does not work, a vet may push the object into the stomach or do surgery.
For a blockage in the gut, Merck says vets usually recommend removing the object with an endoscope or surgery. Let your vet decide the plan instead of waiting at home to see if it passes.
Is fish itself okay for cats?
Fish without bones is a separate question. See our guides on can cats eat tuna and can cats eat salmon.
What about chicken or other bones?
The same warning applies. Our guide on can cats eat bones covers cooked, raw, and other bones.
How to keep your cat safe
- Pick out every bone before you share fish, and check twice.
- Throw leftovers in a trash can with a tight lid.
- Don’t leave plates on the table or counter where your cat can reach them.
- Give a treat that has no bones, like a small piece of plain cooked chicken, and read can cats eat chicken first.
Common questions
What if my cat swallowed a fish bone?
Call your vet right away, even if your cat seems fine. The FDA says to call your vet or a poison control center if you think your pet ate something dangerous.
Can cats eat fish if the bones are removed?
Boneless fish is a different question. See our tuna and salmon guides for what vet sources say about the fish itself.
Will a fish bone dissolve in a cat's stomach?
The sources I read do not say how fish bones act in cats. Merck says bones in general are digested slowly and can block the gut, so do not count on it.
Can cats eat fish bones from canned fish?
The sources I read do not cover canned fish bones. Check with your vet, and do not give bones on purpose.
