Can Dogs Eat Cashews?

Yes, a few plain, unsalted cashews are okay for most dogs once in a while. Here is why fat and salt matter, and what to do if your dog eats too many.

Updated · 3 vet sources · How we research

Short answer · SafeYes, a little.plain and unsalted only

Cashews are not toxic to dogs, so one or two now and then will not hurt most dogs. But cashews are full of fat, and many are salted. Fat can make a dog very sick. If you share any, pick plain, unsalted cashews and keep it to a few.

Are cashews bad for dogs?

The American Kennel Club (AKC) calls cashews generally safe and non-toxic for dogs. They are a high-fat, high-protein snack. That is where the trouble starts.

The AKC also points out that dogs do not need nuts. There is no good reason to feed them, so treat a cashew as a rare extra, not a regular snack.

Why is the fat in cashews a problem?

The AKC says foods this high in fat can trigger pancreatitis. That is a painful swelling of the pancreas, an organ that helps your dog digest food. It can be life-threatening.

The ASPCA says the same about other fatty nuts like almonds, pecans, and walnuts. They can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and in some pets pancreatitis. Lots of fat over time can also lead to weight gain, which the AKC links to problems like diabetes and sore joints.

Are salted or flavored cashews okay?

No. The AKC notes that cashews are usually sold salted. Too much salt can lead to salt poisoning, which the AKC and ASPCA say can cause:

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Weakness or low energy
  • Muscle tremors
  • Seizures

The ASPCA also says that a lot of salt makes dogs thirstier and makes them pee more. Spiced or coated nuts are not good choices either. If a nut has chocolate on it, see our guide on whether dogs can eat chocolate.

How to give cashews safely

If you decide to share one, follow these steps:

  1. Choose plain cashews with no salt, spices, or coating.
  2. Give only one or two, and only once in a while.
  3. Cut a cashew into small pieces. The AKC warns that nuts can cause choking or block the gut, especially in small dogs.
  4. Watch your dog afterward for an upset belly.

Neither the AKC nor the other sources we read give an exact safe number of cashews. Smaller dogs should get less than bigger dogs. Ask your vet if you are unsure.

Other kinds of cashews and nuts

Salted cashews

Skip them. Salt is the main reason store-bought cashews are a poor choice for dogs.

Mixed nuts

Skip the whole can. Mixed nuts may include macadamia nuts, which are toxic to dogs. The AKC also says the loose mix makes choking and blockage more likely.

Macadamia nuts

These are very different from cashews. Pet Poison Helpline says macadamia nuts are toxic to dogs. Signs can include severe tiredness, high body temperature, vomiting, tremors, stiff joints, and trouble walking. The ASPCA says signs usually show up within 12 hours, and dogs are expected to recover in 24 to 72 hours.

Can dogs be allergic to cashews?

It can happen, but the AKC says it is not likely. After your dog tries a cashew, look for swelling, itching, or hives. Call your vet if you see any of these.

What if my dog ate a lot of cashews?

A big pile of cashews, or any salted ones, deserves a call to your vet.

Other treats to try

Many dogs enjoy a few plain blueberries or a slice of apple instead. Our guide to whether dogs can eat apples explains how to serve them. Peanut butter is another common choice, and we cover it in our peanut butter guide.

Treats of all kinds should stay under about 10% of your dog’s daily calories. For a longer list of foods to avoid, see foods that are toxic to dogs.
