Short answer · SafeYes, a little.no seeds, no rind

Yes, dogs can eat watermelon. The red flesh makes a cool, wet treat when you cut it into small pieces. Always take out the seeds and the hard green rind first, because they can upset your dog’s stomach or block the gut. Give only a few bite-sized pieces at a time.

Is watermelon good for dogs?

The AKC calls plain watermelon a refreshing, hydrating treat. It says the fruit has vitamins A, B6, and C, plus potassium. It is still a treat, not a meal. It should not replace your dog’s regular food.

Watermelon also has natural sugar and fiber. Too much at once may upset your dog’s digestion.

Are watermelon seeds bad for dogs?

Yes, take them out. The AKC says seeds can be a choking risk, mostly for small dogs. If a dog eats a lot of them, they may cause a blockage in the gut.

Seedless watermelon is easier to prepare. Still, look over each piece before you hand it over.

Can dogs eat watermelon rind?

No. The AKC says rind is hard to digest. It may cause vomiting, diarrhea, an upset stomach, or a blockage.

The Merck Veterinary Manual explains why a blockage is serious. It says a gut blockage is a medical emergency. It is most often caused by things a dog swallows that can’t be digested or are too big to pass.

How much watermelon can a dog eat?

The AKC suggests a few bite-sized pieces at a time. Treats of all kinds should stay under about 10% of your dog’s daily calories. The other 90% should come from complete, balanced meals.

The sources don’t give an exact number of grams or pieces for each dog size. A smaller dog should get smaller pieces and fewer of them. Ask your vet if your dog has a health problem, such as diabetes, that makes sugar a concern.

Other ways to serve watermelon

Frozen watermelon

Yes. The AKC says frozen chunks, with no seeds or rind, are a good treat in warm weather. Cut the pieces so they suit your dog’s size.

Watermelon candy and sugar-free products

Check the label before you share. The ASPCA says xylitol is a sweetener used in many products, including gum, candy, and baked goods. It can cause low blood sugar and may harm the liver in pets. Real watermelon is a better choice than a flavored snack.

What to do if your dog ate seeds or rind

Watch your dog if it ate rind or a lot of seeds. The AKC and Merck list these signs:

  • Vomiting that keeps happening
  • Diarrhea
  • Pain in the belly
  • Tiredness
  • Not wanting to eat
  • Trouble pooping

Call your vet if you see any of these, or if your dog ate a large amount of rind or seeds. Merck says a blocked gut can be life-threatening if it is not treated.

Other fruits to try

Plain apple slices without the core or seeds, and banana, are other options. See our guides on apples and bananas. Don’t give grapes or raisins. They can cause kidney failure, as we explain in can dogs eat grapes.
