Can Cats Eat Banana Bread?

Banana bread is not a good food for cats. A plain lick is unlikely to be an emergency, but the bread gives your cat nothing it needs. Why is banana bread not good for cats?

The Merck Veterinary Manual says cats are carnivores, which means they eat mainly meat. A complete cat food already gives them what they need. Merck also tells owners to avoid giving table scraps.

Which banana bread mix-ins can hurt a cat?

• Raisins. The Merck Veterinary Manual says there are anecdotal reports of kidney failure in cats after eating grapes or raisins. It also says no case reports have been published for cats, and the known cases are in dogs. The risk for cats is unclear, so treat raisins as a reason to call your vet.

• Xylitol. This is a sweetener in some sugar-free foods. The ASPCA says cats are not negatively affected by xylitol. It is very dangerous for dogs, so keep any sugar-free baking away from a dog.
