Graham crackers are not a good snack for cats. A plain crumb is unlikely to be an emergency, but the cracker gives your cat nothing it needs. Check the label first. Chocolate, nuts, or other add-ins are the real worry. Call your vet if your cat ate a cracker with those.
Why are graham crackers not good for cats?
The Merck Veterinary Manual says cats are carnivores, which means they eat mainly meat. A complete cat food already gives them what they need. Merck also tells owners to avoid giving table scraps.
A graham cracker is a people snack. It is not made for cats. The Merck page says overfeeding can lead to obesity and other serious health problems, so even a harmless snack adds up if it becomes a habit.

Which graham cracker extras can hurt a cat?
Graham crackers are often used in desserts and sold in many forms. Look at the full ingredient list.
- Chocolate. The ASPCA says chocolate has methylxanthines. These can cause vomiting, diarrhea, extra thirst, an uneven heartbeat, tremors, seizures, and even death. Dark chocolate is riskier. Baking chocolate and cocoa powder have the most. Our guide on chocolate for cats has more.
- Nuts. The ASPCA says nuts like almonds, pecans, and walnuts are high in oils and fat. These can cause vomiting and diarrhea, and may inflame the pancreas in some pets. See our guide on almonds for cats.
- Xylitol. This is a sweetener in some sugar-free foods. The ASPCA says cats are not negatively affected by xylitol. It is very dangerous for dogs, so keep sugar-free snacks away from a dog.
The sources we read do not say anything about other flavorings for cats. If you are unsure about an ingredient, call your vet.
What about graham cracker desserts?
Cheesecake crusts, s’mores, and pie crusts often come with other foods that are worse for cats. Chocolate is common in s’mores. The ASPCA also says pets have little of the enzyme that digests lactose, so dairy like cream cheese can cause diarrhea or an upset stomach. Keep the whole dessert away from your cat.
What should I watch for if my cat ate a graham cracker?
A plain cracker may upset your cat’s belly. Watch for vomiting, loose stool, or not wanting to eat. Signs of chocolate poisoning include vomiting, diarrhea, extra thirst, tremors, and seizures.
Have the package ready when you call. Tell the vet how much your cat ate and when. The ASPCA suggests noting the amount eaten before you call.
What can I give my cat instead?
Treats made for cats are the easiest choice. You can also offer a few pieces of your cat’s regular food as a reward. For more on what to avoid, see our guide to foods that are toxic to cats. A similar baked treat is covered in banana bread for cats.
